Wayne Thomas Haug

Wayne Thomas Haug

Wayne Thomas Haug gave up his battle for life February 5, 2012 to the cancer he struggled with for many years, after being sprayed with "Agent Orange" during the Viet Nam war. To friends and family he was better known as "Tommy." A topic not known to many, he was truly a war Hero, who saved the lives of several men in his company by stepping in front a live grenade. He had previously fought many other skirmishes, but this unselfish act was only to save the lives of other comrades. After considerable hospital confinement and many surgeries, years later after his discharge from the Marine's, he was still pulling grenade fragments from his jaw and from below teeth. He survived the war, but did not often speak of the details.

He was extremely proud to claim the title of being a United States Marine. His medals and scars proved his valor and love for country; two 2 purple hearts, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and Machine Gun sharpshooter.

Tommy at 63 years of age was wheelchair bound in his final year, but on the most simple days a friendly discussion would produce a smile or bring on talks of current events or old "war stories."

Tommy is survived by his loving brother Steven Haug of Indianapolis, IN and two children son Jamie Haug and a daughter Elizabeth Jane. He loved both fondly in his own quiet style. Tommy also leaves four sisters 1 Pamela Houze and 2 Norma Gandall from Florida, 3 Constance Ferrin from Texas, and 4 Ginger Nelis from Indianapolis, IN. Tommy did not get to see the family he cared for as much as he would have liked after leaving home in Indiana, but he did feel he had found a piece of paradise in his final 5 years on Tybee Island, GA. He was loved by many, and enjoyed good fellowship with friends. He felt at home.

A dear friend Tommy met on Tybee, who gave him care and comfort until his final days was Patrick Hadley. He and Patrick shared a home, meals, friends, visits out on the town, mutual respect and when Tommy needed medicine or a trip to the emergency room Patrick was by his side as his constant caregiver.

We will miss him deeply and always remember the man who gave so much, but sadly took part of our hearts when he left to be with the Lord. Tommy will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
